David Alpert is an award-winning New York City based director (SDC), whose work has been applauded by both the New York Times and The New Yorker. As a director of both plays and musicals, his work has taken him across the country, and has brought him into rehearsal rooms with some of the leading players in the Broadway community. On Broadway he served as the Associate Director on If/Then (written by the Pulitzer Prize winning team of Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey, directed by Michael Greif),  the Tony-Award winning production of The Trip to Bountiful starring Cicely Tyson & Vanessa Williams (also at the Center Theatre Group in Los Angeles), and assisted on The Best Man starring James Earl Jones, Angela Lansbury, Candice Bergen, John Larroquette, Eric McCormack, and John Stamos, as well as the revival of Guys & Dolls. In NYC he has directed the premieres of The Apple Boys (HERE Arts), Our Brother’s Son (The Linney at Signature), and A Scythe of Time (June Havoc).

In addition to his work directing for the stage, David serves as the creative director for Tony Award-winner Idina Menzel (and can be seen on Disney+ in Idina’s “Which Way to the Stage” documentary), was the founding Artistic Director for BroadwayCon, is an Adjunct Professor of Acting at New York University (Steinhardt), and frequently collaborates with the Broadway Green Alliance. He is also the creator and host of “E-Ticket to Broadway,” a podcast that features Broadway stars sharing their love and stories of the Disney Theme Parks—guests include Susan Egan, Idina Menzel, Andrew Barth Feldman, Keala Settle, Jessie Mueller, Jodi Benson, Jonathan Freeman, Tituss Burgess, and many more.

Every year, David proudly presents the “Living for Today” concert series, which brings together Broadway performers for a night of music to benefit Gilana’s Fund, a non-profit organization that uplift and support organizations which celebrate and promote equality, justice, inclusion, & acceptance of our communities, each other, and ourselves. The concert has attracted such stars as Candace Bergen, Vanessa Williams, Jim Dale, Idina Menzel, Alice Ripley, LaChanze, Tituss Burgess, Lena Hall, Paige Davis, Kate Mulgrew, Bebe Neuwirth, and many more.  The Fund was created in 2007 after David’s sister Gilana passed away at the age of 26, and to date, Gilana’s Fund has raised over $100,000.

David is a member of SDC, and graduated summa cum laude from Western Michigan University with a BA in Theatre Studies (Directing).  Upon graduation he was awarded both of the Department's top honors: the Presidential Scholar, and the Conspicuous Achievement in Theatre Award, and in 2016 was selected as a Distinguished Alumni of the University.
